Two-Racket Lift and Toss Game

This creative drill introduces young players (under 10) to body rotation and racket control in a fun, interactive way. By using two rackets to lift and toss a ball, kids practice coordination, balance, and motor skills while building familiarity with the feel of a racket. It’s easily modified for both beginners and slightly more advanced players.

Setup

  • Each pair of players shares one ball
  • One player starts with two rackets (one in each hand)
  • Partner begins without a racket, positioned a short distance away
  • Tennis balls placed on the ground in front of players

Rules & Objectives

  • Player with two rackets uses them together to scoop and lift the ball from the ground
  • Player tosses the ball to their partner using the rackets
  • Partner catches the ball with their bare hand and rolls it back
  • Repeat several times, then switch roles so each player practices lifting and tossing

Repetition

  • Continue until both players have had multiple turns with two rackets
  • Progression: both players use two rackets and toss balls over the net instead of rolling
  • Advanced variation: receiving player tries to catch the ball with their rackets after one bounce, two bounces, or directly out of the air
  • Add friendly scoring (e.g., points for clean catches or successful tosses over the net)

Coaching Points

  • Develops hand-eye coordination and control
  • Introduces rotational body movement important in tennis strokes
  • Builds familiarity with racket handling and touch
  • Fun, engaging activity for kids under 10 at any level
