Two-on-One Baseline Movement
This drill combines conditioning with technical skill, making it ideal for players working on endurance, footwork, and shot consistency. One baseline player is challenged to cover the court against two net players who focus on volley control. The exercise builds stamina for the baseline player while training the net players to maintain steady volleys and keep the rally alive.
Setup
- One baseline player positioned on the singles baseline
- Two players positioned at the net
- Coach provides balls as needed to keep play continuous
- Rotate positions every 5 minutes
Rules & Objectives
- Rally begins with a feed from the coach or one of the net players
- The two net players volley back and forth, directing balls alternately crosscourt and down the line to move the baseline player
- The baseline player must recover and return every ball back to the net players
- Play continues without aiming for winners—focus is on consistency and control
- After 5–10 minutes (or when the baseline player is fatigued), rotate clockwise so each player experiences both baseline and net roles
Repetition
- Begin with steady feeds, then increase pace and variety
- Limit targets (e.g., baseline player must hit only crosscourt or only down the line for a set)
- Shorten or lengthen rally times to adjust fitness demand
- Use time goals (e.g., 3 minutes of nonstop rallying) before rotating
Coaching Points
- Baseline player: builds endurance, improves footwork, and sharpens running groundstrokes
- Net players: develop volley consistency, control, and anticipation
- All players: improve focus, coordination, and tactical awareness
- Excellent conditioning drill with a strong technical component
