Two-Forehand Attack Drill
This drill emphasizes consistency, point construction, and controlled aggressiveness by structuring rallies to begin with a set pattern before transitioning into live point play. Players practice running around their backhand to hit forehands, reinforcing footwork, anticipation, and tactical shot selection. By repeating the sequence multiple times before allowing the point to open up, players develop discipline in building rallies while also learning to use their strengths to dictate play.
Setup
- Two players begin at the baseline: one positioned in the middle, the other on the backhand side
- Coach stands ready to feed the first ball
- Additional players can wait on the sideline to rotate in after each sequence
Rules & Objectives
- Coach feeds the first ball to Player 5 in the middle
- Player 5 hits a powerful forehand crosscourt
- Player 3 responds with a down-the-line shot
- Player 5 runs around to hit another forehand from the backhand side
- After this second forehand, the rally becomes live point play
- Sequence is repeated three times, after which players rotate to keep everyone engaged
- Drill can also be run starting with the backhand: first ball crosscourt with a backhand, followed by the opponent hitting down the line, and then play opens up
Repetition
- Run each sequence three times before rotating players
- Alternate between forehand-based and backhand-based sequences
- Track rally outcomes to emphasize controlled aggressiveness over unforced errors
Coaching Points
- Builds consistency in structured rally patterns
- Reinforces footwork for running around the backhand to dictate play with the forehand
- Develops tactical awareness in constructing points
- Encourages controlled aggression rather than reckless shot-making
