Two-Ball Sequence

This drill combines baseline groundstrokes with approach volleys and on-the-rise hitting to simulate aggressive point play. By working on both deep shots and transition balls, players practice moving forward, preparing early, and taking time away from opponents. It’s an excellent way to sharpen offensive footwork, improve timing on volleys and drive volleys, and build confidence in attacking from different court positions.

Setup

  • Coach/feeder positioned at the T-line with a basket of balls
  • Student positioned at the baseline
  • Full singles court available

Rules & Objectives

  • Coach feeds the first ball deep to the baseline
  • Student hits a strong groundstroke down the line
  • Coach immediately tosses the second ball high and short
  • Student moves forward and hits it out of the air as a forehand or backhand drive volley (not a traditional punch volley)
  • Repeat sequence for several minutes
  • Switch sides so the player practices both forehand and backhand groundstrokes followed by drive volleys

Repetition

  • Progression 1: Instead of feeding the second ball for a volley, let it bounce so the player must hit it on the rise
  • Progression 2: Alternate targets — require down-the-line or crosscourt execution
  • Progression 3: Add a slice option, where the player hits the second ball as a backhand slice approach shot
  • Rotate players after a set number of repetitions or minutes

  • Develops timing and confidence in taking the ball early
  • Trains smooth transitions from baseline rally to net play
  • Reinforces footwork and positioning for attacking shots
  • Builds variety with forehand, backhand, on-the-rise, and slice options
