Tug-of-War Game

This competitive scoring game helps players understand the importance of momentum and consistency in tennis. By requiring multiple points in a row to win, players learn to stay focused under pressure, maintain control, and manage match situations more effectively. The tug-of-war format makes rallies engaging while reinforcing discipline in shot selection.

Setup

  • Two players on opposite sides of the court
  • One ball in play (coach with basket optional for feeding)
  • Start score: 5 points each

Rules & Objectives

  • Players begin with 5 points each
  • Play out single points using an underhand feed to start
  • Each time a player wins a rally, they gain +1 point while the opponent loses -1 point
  • Example: If Player A wins, they go from 5 to 6, and Player B goes from 5 to 4
  • The first player to reach 10 points wins the game
  • Because the score swings back and forth, players must string together multiple points in a row to claim victory

Repetition

  • Restrict play to one half of the court (e.g., crosscourt only)
  • Limit strokes (forehands only, backhands only, or baseline rallies only)
  • For advanced players, extend the winning score target beyond 10 to require even more consistency

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces the value of momentum in matches
  • Trains consistency under pressure
  • Encourages smarter shot selection and patience
  • Provides a competitive but fun scoring challenge
