Toss Accuracy Challenge
This drill teaches players how to develop a consistent and purposeful ball toss, the foundation of an effective serve. By tossing one ball and attempting to hit it with another, players practice accuracy, trajectory, and rhythm in their service motion. This fun, competitive activity builds focus and intent while reinforcing the importance of a straight, reliable toss.
Setup
- Players line up along the baseline
- Each player holds two balls (one in each hand)
- No racquets required at the start
Rules & Objectives
- Player begins their service motion without a racquet
- Toss the first ball up as if preparing to serve
- Immediately throw the second ball (from the opposite hand) at the first ball in the air
- Player earns 1 point if the second ball strikes the tossed ball
- Repeat for multiple attempts, keeping score individually or as a group contest
- Once consistency is developed, progress to practicing a normal serve with the racquet
Repetition
- Begin with slow, low tosses to learn control
- Increase toss height gradually to replicate a real serve
- Encourage players to aim for both straight and slightly forward tosses
- Transition to full serve practice with racquets, applying the same toss focus
Coaching Points
- Develops accurate, consistent ball toss
- Builds awareness of toss trajectory (upward and forward, not just forward)
- Reinforces fundamentals before using a racquet
- Makes serving practice fun and competitive
- Prepares players for smoother transition into full service motion
