Three-Serve Tiebreak Drill

This drill uses a modified tiebreak game to help players build confidence and consistency on their serves. By allowing each player three serves instead of the traditional two, the drill reduces mental pressure and encourages experimentation with placement, spin, and aggression. It’s a competitive way to simulate match play while focusing specifically on service strategy and execution.

Setup

  • Two players
  • Standard tennis court and balls
  • Play a regular tiebreak format (first to 7 points, win by 2)

Rules & Objectives

  • Players play a standard tiebreak game
  • Instead of two serves per point, each player receives three serves
  • Encourage players to be more aggressive with the first two serves
  • Use the third serve strategically—adding spin or ensuring consistency
  • Play out the tiebreak until a winner is determined

Repetition

  • Alternate between three and four serves for less experienced players
  • Require the first two serves to be hit as first serves (more aggressive)
  • Make the third serve a “must spin” second serve
  • Add conditions such as mandatory serve-and-volley
  • Play with two second serves (both must land in) to emphasize placement

Coaching Points

  • Reduces mental pressure by adding a third serve
  • Encourages aggressive serving while maintaining consistency
  • Improves second-serve variety (spin, placement, control)
  • Simulates match-like pressure in a fun and competitive format
