Three-Player Rotation Rally
This drill is designed to improve timing, rhythm, and consistency from the baseline. It uses three players, making it a great solution when odd numbers are available during practice. The goal is to maintain a controlled rally while rotating players after a set number of shots. This structure challenges focus, coordination, and stamina while ensuring all players stay active. Coaches can adapt the drill to full-court or crosscourt play depending on the level of the group.
Setup
- Three players are required for this drill
- Two players begin on one side of the court, while the third is on the opposite side
- The rally is continuous, with rotations after an agreed number of shots (e.g., 8–10)
Rules & Objectives
- Players 1 and 3 begin rallying from the baseline
- After the agreed number of shots, Player 1 crosses over to the opposite side while Player 2 steps in to continue the rally with Player 3
- The rotation continues: after the next set of shots, Player 3 crosses over, leaving Player 2 to rally with the remaining partner
- The pattern repeats so that each player alternates between rallying and waiting
- The rally should be sustained as long as possible with an emphasis on timing, consistency, and depth
Repetition
- Continue the drill for about 10 minutes or for multiple rally cycles
- Coaches may choose to restrict play to crosscourt rallies for added variation
Coaching Points
- Enhances baseline consistency and depth
- Builds timing and rhythm in extended rallies
- Keeps three players engaged efficiently in one drill
- Reinforces focus and stamina through repetition
