Three-Ball Topspin Target Drill
This feeding drill trains players to generate heavy topspin with proper net clearance and directional control. By hitting three different feeds of varying depth, players learn to adjust footwork and positioning while maintaining consistency and spin.
Setup
- Coach stands with a basket of balls on one side of the net
- Targets (cones or markers) placed deep in both corners of the opposite court
- Players line up at the baseline
Rules & Objectives
- Coach feeds Ball 1 deep to the baseline
- Player returns with a heavy topspin shot aimed at a corner target
- Coach feeds Ball 2 shorter, near the service line
- Player adjusts forward and hits with topspin to a target
- Coach feeds Ball 3 short into the service box
- Player steps in and lifts the ball with topspin back deep into the corner
- After completing all three shots, the player rotates out and the next player steps in
Repetition
- Run sequences continuously with each player hitting 3-ball rotations
- Progression 1: Repeat drill from the backhand side
- Progression 2: Add specific shot patterns (e.g., inside-out forehand, crosscourt)
- Progression 3: Require players to alternate targets
Coaching Points
- Reinforces topspin technique with high net clearance
- Trains players to adjust to deep, medium, and short feeds
- Builds racket speed and hip rotation for spin production
- Improves accuracy by aiming for deep corner targets
