Three-Ball Sequence
This drill introduces beginners to rallying, approaching, and volleying in a simple, structured way. By receiving three different feeds in one sequence, players develop basic groundstrokes, learn to transition forward, and practice finishing points at the net. It’s easy to organize, keeps players engaged, and offers variety while reinforcing fundamental tennis skills.
Setup
- Players form two lines behind the baseline on the same side of the court
- Coach stands on the opposite side of the net with a basket of balls
- Space for 6–8 players works best to minimize waiting time
- Optional: cones or targets on the other side for accuracy practice
Rules & Objectives
- Player at the front of Line A steps forward
- Coach feeds three balls in succession:Ball 1: a deep ball to the forehand or backhand side
- Ball 2: an approach shot to the opposite side
- Ball 3: a volley near the net
- After completing the sequence, the player moves off to the side and joins the back of Line B
- Next, a player from Line B repeats the same sequence, then joins Line A
- Continue alternating lines until all players have repeated multiple turns
Repetition
- Add targets (cones) for players to hit during each shot
- Vary feeds: high, low, fast, or slow depending on player ability
- For more challenge, require players to call out forehand/backhand before hitting
- Keep rotations fast to maintain energy and engagement
Coaching Points
- Builds confidence in groundstrokes, approach shots, and volleys
- Teaches court movement and transitioning from baseline to net
- Improves footwork, timing, and shot adaptability
- Keeps beginners active with limited downtime
