Tennis Court Baseline Drills

This drill focuses on accuracy, consistency, and rhythm by restricting play to the doubles alley. Players rally back and forth from the baseline, aiming to land shots within the narrow target area. The challenge forces precision while reinforcing footwork and shot preparation. Adding a scoring element makes the exercise competitive and engaging, motivating players to improve control under pressure.

Setup

  • Two players position themselves in the doubles alley on opposite baselines
  • A set time frame is chosen (e.g., 2–3 minutes per round)
  • Scoring is based on successful shots landing in the doubles alley

Rules & Objectives

  • Players rally cooperatively, hitting only within the doubles alley
  • Each shot that lands in the target area counts as one point
  • Continue for the full time frame while maintaining rhythm and footwork
  • After time is up, players compare scores
  • Variations may include forehands only, backhands only, or alternating forehand and backhand

Repetition

  • Play multiple rounds, keeping track of scores to track improvement
  • Adjust the rally duration or increase restrictions to raise difficulty

Coaching Points

  • Builds accuracy and control on baseline groundstrokes
