Target Cone Challenge
This drill improves serve accuracy and precision by giving players specific targets to hit within the service box. By repeatedly aiming at cones placed in strategic spots, players learn to place serves wide, down the T, or into the body. The exercise builds focus, consistency, and confidence while simulating tactical serving patterns used in matches.
Setup
- Basket of balls
- 3–4 cones or markers placed in the service boxes:Wide corner (deuce and ad sides)
- Center/T (deuce and ad sides)
- Optional: body/inside target near the service line
- Singles or doubles court
Rules & Objectives
- Player begins serving to one designated target (e.g., wide serve on the deuce side)
- Hit approximately 15 serves to that target, trying to knock down or hit the cone
- Rotate to the next target (e.g., T serve or wide ad serve)
- Continue until all targets have been practiced
- Track how many serves hit each target successfully
Repetition
- Use first serves only for power or second serves only for spin/placement
- Play until all cones are knocked down instead of a set number of attempts
- Time the drill: see how fast a player can hit all targets
- Add scoring: 1 point per target hit, with a set goal to reach
Coaching Points
- Builds serve accuracy and placement
- Reinforces tactical serving patterns (wide, body, T)
- Encourages consistent ball toss and repetition
- Adds fun and competitiveness with visual targets
- Prepares players for match situations by simulating real serve locations
