Shuffle & Backpedal Point Drill

This drill is designed to improve footwork, agility, and quick transitions between defensive and offensive movement in tennis. Players practice side shuffling and backpedaling before being required to hit a controlled shot, simulating the type of recovery and positioning used in live points. By combining movement patterns with point play, the drill develops both stamina and shot readiness. It’s an effective way to train coordination and endurance while keeping practice competitive.

Setup

  • Players line up at the service line in pairs
  • Coach stands at the net with a basket of balls
  • Court space is used for crosscourt hitting

Rules & Objectives

  • First player side shuffles from the service line to the center T
  • From the T, the player backpedals to the baseline
  • As the player finishes, the coach feeds a ball crosscourt
  • Player 1 moves into position and hits the ball crosscourt
  • Player 2 returns crosscourt, and the point is played out
  • After the rally ends, the next set of players rotates in

Repetition

  • Run the drill until all players have completed several turns
  • Increase intensity by feeding faster or deeper balls
  • Require two or more fed balls before point play begins
  • Add a time limit for the shuffle and backpedal movements

Coaching Points

  • Improves agility and directional movement
  • Builds endurance and quick recovery skills
  • Reinforces control on crosscourt shots
  • Enhances readiness to transition from footwork drills into live play
