Service Line to Net Progression

This cooperative drill improves volley technique, control, and consistency while teaching players to move forward with purpose. Starting at the service line, both players rally volleys at a controlled but challenging pace, stepping closer to the net after each shot. The progressive movement emphasizes footwork, positioning, and maintaining firm contact at the correct strike zone.

Setup

  • 2 players
  • Begin at the service line on opposite sides of the net
  • Standard racquets and balls

Rules & Objectives

  • Both players start a cooperative volley rally from the service line
  • After each volley, both players take one step forward toward the net
  • Continue rallying until the ball is missed or both players reach the net
  • Reset to the service line and repeat
  • Keep the rally pace challenging but controlled—firm volleys, not slow floaters

Repetition

  • Repeat multiple rounds, focusing on longer cooperative rallies each time
  • Add restrictions: one player hits only crosscourt volleys, the other only down-the-line volleys
  • Limit volleys to forehand or backhand only
  • Add scoring: see how many successful volleys both players can achieve before breaking down

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces correct volley fundamentals: firm wrist, contact in front, step into the ball
  • Improves footwork and forward movement
  • Develops consistency and control under pressure
  • Builds awareness of volley placement (crosscourt vs down-the-line)
