Service Line Half-Volley Drill

The half volley is one of the most challenging shots in tennis, requiring soft hands, balance, and precise timing. This drill develops a player’s ability to handle low balls by rallying cooperatively just behind the service line. By aiming for the service line bounce, players improve touch, positioning, and consistency in defensive and transition situations.

Setup

  • Two players positioned just behind their respective service lines
  • Tennis balls
  • Optional cones placed along the service line to highlight target zones

Rules & Objectives

  • Players rally cooperatively, focusing only on half volleys
  • Each shot should bounce on or near the opponent’s service line
  • A point is scored for every bounce that lands directly on the service line
  • Players reset and continue the rally, keeping the exchange controlled

Repetition

  • Rally until one player reaches a set score (e.g., 10 points)
  • Restrict to forehand half volleys only, then backhand only
  • Progress to alternating forehand/backhand patterns
  • Add movement: require a split step before each half volley

Coaching Points

  • Trains timing and technique for handling low balls
  • Reinforces proper half-volley fundamentals: bent knees, low stance, open racket face, contact out in front
  • Improves touch and control in tight court situations
  • Builds transition skills for approach shots and net play
