Serve Target Zone Challenge
This drill develops serve accuracy and adaptability by dividing the service box into three target zones. The coach calls out which zone the player must serve to, forcing the server to focus on precision and control while maintaining proper technique. By adding variations in spin or introducing a returner, the drill can be scaled from fundamental practice to match-like scenarios.
Setup
- One server positioned on the baseline
- Coach at the net post or opposite side of the court to give instructions
- Service box divided into three zones using cones, chalk, or markers (Zones 1, 2, 3)
- Optional returner on the opposite side
Rules & Objectives
- Coach calls out a number (1, 2, or 3) corresponding to a target zone
- The server attempts to place the serve into that zone
- Repeat with multiple serves, rotating through zones to practice accuracy across the service box
- Continue until the player consistently hits all target zones
- Optional: if a returner is added, they attempt to play the ball back, making the drill more realistic
Repetition
- Begin with flat serves to establish accuracy
- Progress by requiring spin variations (slice, topspin, kick)
- Add time pressure—e.g., 10 serves to hit all three targets
- Introduce a returner to simulate match play
Coaching Points
- Builds serve accuracy and placement variety
- Reinforces proper technique (ball toss, full extension, timing)
- Trains adaptability by forcing players to adjust quickly to called zones
- Improves tactical serving by learning to avoid returners’ hitting zones
- Scales easily from beginner fundamentals to advanced match preparation
