Serve and Volley Doubles Game
This drill helps players practice the classic serve-and-volley tactic, which remains an effective strategy despite being less common in the modern game. By serving and immediately moving forward, players develop the habit of closing the net and avoiding “no man’s land and ” The competitive point play format simulates match pressure while reinforcing quick transitions from serve to net.
Setup
- Two doubles pairs (4 players total)
- Standard doubles court
- Basket of balls for repeated serves
Rules & Objectives
- Server begins each point with a cooperative underarm or overarm serve
- Immediately after serving, the server moves quickly forward toward the net
- All players are encouraged to move toward the net to avoid being stuck in no man’s land
- Point is then played out competitively
- Rotate servers after several points
Repetition
- Begin with underarm or cooperative serves to emphasize movement
- Progress to full overarm serves from the baseline
- Add conditions such as “no lobs allowed” to force net play
- Keep score to simulate a game or set format
