Rotating Doubles Point Drill

This drill keeps players active and sharp in doubles play by rotating them through all court positions. It emphasizes net reflexes, quick transitions, and adapting to different doubles roles. Because the drill involves continuous point play with frequent rotation, it is excellent for larger groups where everyone needs to stay engaged and moving.

Setup

  • Four groups of players (at least 8 total)
  • Standard doubles court
  • Basket of balls for quick restarts

Rules & Objectives

  • Divide players into four groups (two groups per side)
  • The first player from each group begins on the court in standard doubles positions
  • A point starts with a serve or drop feed
  • After the point is completed, the on-court players rotate out and the next players from each group rotate in
  • Continue playing points quickly, alternating which side starts the feed every 5 points
  • Players may take any doubles position (net or baseline) as they rotate in

Repetition

  • Continue until each player has cycled through all positions multiple times
  • Progress by limiting feeds to one side (e.g., only deuce side serves)
  • Add scoring (first side to 10 points) for a competitive format
  • Increase intensity by requiring all rotations within 5 seconds

Coaching Points

  • Improves reflexes and net play under pressure
  • Reinforces doubles movement and positioning
  • Builds adaptability by playing from all four positions
  • Keeps large groups engaged and constantly active
