Rope Variation Game

This drill trains players to vary the height and pace of their shots by introducing a rope suspended above the net as a target line. One side practices hitting high, looping shots to push opponents back, while the other side focuses on driving lower, faster shots under the rope. Switching roles ensures players experience both offensive pace and defensive depth, improving adaptability and tactical variety during rallies.

Setup

  • Rope tied above the net, approximately twice the height of the regular net
  • Two players per side (four total)
  • Standard tennis balls and rackets

Rules & Objectives

  • Position the rope across the net, creating a higher barrier
  • Pair 1 (Side A) rallies by hitting the ball over the rope with high, deep trajectories
  • Pair 2 (Side B) rallies by hitting the ball under the rope with pace while keeping it above the net
  • Continue rallying for 2–4 minutes, focusing on consistency and shot variation
  • After the set time, switch roles so each pair practices both styles

Repetition

  • Extend rally duration or add scoring (points for longest rally or successful target shots)
  • Vary rope height to increase or decrease challenge
  • Require specific strokes (e.g., forehands only, backhands only)
  • Transition into live point play after practicing the variation

Coaching Points

  • Trains high, deep shots to pin opponents behind the baseline
  • Reinforces low, fast drives for offensive pressure
  • Builds awareness of shot variation and tactical transitions
  • Enhances control and adaptability in rallies
