Reaction Drop Drill
This drill sharpens reaction time, coordination, and footwork by training players to quickly recognize and respond to a dropped ball. The unpredictability of the feed forces players to move explosively in either direction, execute the correct shot, and recover to the baseline. It’s an excellent way to combine agility, anticipation, and technical preparation into one exercise, with variations for both beginners and advanced players.
Setup
- Coach stands near the T-line holding one ball in each hand, arms extended outward
- Player starts in ready position at the baseline
- Basket of balls available for continuous feeds
Rules & Objectives
- Coach drops one of the two balls (left or right hand) without warning
- Player reacts instantly, moves forward, and strikes the dropped ball:
- If the ball is on the player’s right side → hit a forehand
- If the ball is on the left side → hit a backhand
- After hitting, player recovers to the baseline ready position
- Repeat with the coach alternating which ball is dropped
- Continue until the basket of balls is used
Repetition
- Beginner progression: player catches the ball by hand instead of hitting with a racket
- Advanced progression: require specific targets (e.g., forehand down the line, backhand crosscourt)
- Add fitness challenge: after each shot, player must perform a split-step recovery before next feed
- Time-based competition: see how many successful shots a player can make in one minute
Coaching Points
- Improves reaction speed and quick first step
- Builds footwork coordination under unpredictable conditions
- Reinforces shot preparation (early backswing and body positioning)
- Develops mental alertness and anticipation
- Adaptable for all skill levels (catching progression for beginners, advanced targets for pros)
