Racket Rolling and Target Drill

This drill introduces young players to racket control and accuracy in a fun, game-like way. By rolling the ball along the ground and aiming for a target, kids develop hand-eye coordination, touch, and focus. The scoring system keeps them engaged while also reinforcing basic racket handling without pressure on competition.

Setup

  • Place four spots or markers in a line for the rolling path
  • Two cones set up as a “goal” at the end of the path
  • Players line up single-file with rackets and one tennis ball each

Rules & Objectives

  • The first player in line uses their racket to roll the ball along the ground, weaving around each of the four spots
  • At the final marker (the “launching pad”), the player stops the ball with their racket
  • From there, they push or “shoot” the ball sideways with the racket, aiming between the two cones
  • Each successful shot through the cones is worth one point
  • After their turn, the player rejoins the line and the next child goes

Repetition

  • Continue for 2–3 minutes, rotating players quickly
  • Keep score loosely, focusing more on fun than competition
  • Make it harder by increasing the distance to the cones or narrowing the target gap
  • For older kids, require them to use both forehand and backhand sides of the racket

Coaching Points

  • Builds early racket control and coordination
  • Teaches accuracy and aim in a playful way
  • Encourages focus and balance while moving the ball
  • Provides a fun introduction to competition without pressure
