Racket Roll Target Game

This beginner-friendly warm-up drill introduces young players to proper racket use while building accuracy and teamwork. By rolling the ball with the side of the racket instead of the tip, kids start to understand correct racket orientation for real tennis shots. The simple point system keeps them motivated, while the activity reinforces control, focus, and cooperative play.

Setup

  • Players line up facing partners across a short distance
  • Place two cones or markers in the center as a target “gate”
  • One tennis ball per pair
  • Each player has a racket

Rules & Objectives

  • Player A rolls the ball forward with the side of the racket, aiming it through the two cones
  • Player B receives the ball with their racket—again using the side, not the tip—and stops it under control
  • Player B then rolls the ball back through the cones to Player A
  • Each successful roll through the cones counts as one point for the pair
  • Continue the exchange for a set time (e.g., 2–3 minutes)

Repetition

  • Narrow the space between cones to increase difficulty
  • Move players farther apart for longer rolls
  • Encourage alternating forehand and backhand sides of the racket
  • Play to a target score (e.g., 10 points) for added excitement

Coaching Points

  • Teaches correct racket orientation (side vs. tip)
  • Builds ball control and accuracy
  • Encourages cooperative teamwork
  • Provides a fun introduction to basic tennis movement
