Progressive Volley and Lob Drill
This drill trains players to advance step by step from the baseline to the net while developing consistency on volleys and reactions to defensive lobs. It emphasizes forward movement, proper spacing, and recovery skills when transitioning into the forecourt. The final lob element simulates match play, forcing the player to either hit an overhead or chase down the ball.
Setup
- Coach with basket of balls on one baseline
- Players lined up behind the opposite baseline, one active at a time
- Court space clear for forward movement toward the net
Rules & Objectives
- Player starts behind the baseline and rallies cooperatively with the coach
- With each volley, the player moves closer to the net
- Once the player reaches the net, they must touch it with their racket
- At that point, the coach feeds a lob over the player
- The player attempts to return the lob—either as an overhead smash or after a bounce
- Sequence ends after the lob return; the next player in line repeats the drill
Repetition
- Run through the drill until all players complete multiple turns
- Add a condition: players must reach the net within three volleys
- Increase challenge by making lobs deeper or angled
- For advanced players, require all lob returns to be overheads
Coaching Points
- Builds confidence in approaching the net step by step
- Improves volley consistency and control while moving forward
- Trains recovery against defensive lobs
- Reinforces footwork and positioning, especially moving to the forehand side for overheads
