Ping Pong Doubles Game
This fun and engaging drill adapts table tennis rules to a smaller tennis court, creating a lively doubles game for beginners. By playing in a reduced space, players develop control, accuracy, and quick reactions while working with teammates in rotation. The competitive scoring format keeps players motivated, and variations make it suitable for both kids and adults at different skill levels.
Setup
- Mark out a smaller “mini-court” using cones or tape (baseline moved closer, singles sidelines remain)
- Two teams of two players (doubles)
- Coach feeds the first ball to start each rally
- Optional: foam balls or low-pressure balls for younger players
Rules & Objectives
- Coach feeds the ball into play to start the rally
- Players must keep the ball inside the smaller, marked court
- After each hit, the player rotates out and their partner steps in—similar to table tennis doubles rules
- Play rallies until one team misses
- Play sets to 11 or 21 points
Repetition
- Adjust court size depending on age and skill level
- Use softer balls (foam or low-compression) for beginners
- Add the one-racket variation, where each team has only one racket and players must pass it back and forth between shots
- Increase difficulty by requiring crosscourt or down-the-line shots only
Coaching Points
- Improves accuracy and ball control in a smaller space
- Trains quick footwork and reaction time
- Builds teamwork and communication in doubles
- Provides a fun, game-like warm-up suitable for all ages
- Keeps beginners engaged with a competitive yet accessible format
