Overhead Smash Recovery Drill

The overhead smash is one of the least-practiced but most essential finishing shots in tennis. This drill builds confidence in executing overheads while emphasizing footwork, recovery, and positioning. Players learn to move back quickly, time their contact, and reset for the next overhead, mimicking real match situations where multiple lobs must be covered.

Setup

  • Two players: one feeder at the baseline, one hitter starting at the net
  • Tennis balls
  • Space marked for net player to recover between repetitions

Rules & Objectives

  • Net player begins by touching the net with their racket to signal readiness
  • Baseline feeder lobs the ball; net player side-steps back and hits an overhead
  • Immediately after the smash, the net player runs forward to touch the net again
  • Baseline feeder lobs another ball; net player retreats and hits the next overhead
  • Continue for 10–15 repetitions, then switch roles
  • Repeat 2–3 full sets

Repetition

  • Start with consistent lobs to the center
  • Progress to varied lobs (left, right, deeper) to force different footwork adjustments
  • Add the scissor-kick jump on deeper lobs for power and recovery practice

Coaching Points

  • Improves overhead smash technique and confidence
  • Reinforces quick recovery between shots
  • Develops proper footwork when retreating for lobs
  • Trains timing and use of scissor-kick mechanics
