Octopus Tag Game

This warm-up game is a fun way for kids 10 and under to build agility, balance, and quickness while starting practice with energy. The game uses a tag format where one player, the “octopus,” tries to tag the “fish” running across the court. It encourages speed, awareness, and group participation, making it a great introduction activity for young players.

Setup

  • Full or half tennis court
  • One child designated as the octopus
  • All other children are fish, starting on the opposite baseline

Rules & Objectives

  • Octopus stands on one side of the court, while fish line up on the opposite side
  • On the coach’s command (“Run!”), the fish attempt to run past the octopus to the far side
  • The octopus tries to tag as many fish as possible
  • Any tagged fish must sit down where they were tagged and become stuck fish
  • In the next round, stuck fish can tag passing players but must stay seated
  • Continue rounds until only one or two fish remain untagged
  • Rotate roles so different kids get to be the octopus

Repetition

  • Repeat several rounds, rotating octopus role each time
  • Add a time challenge: fish must cross within 5 seconds
  • Use smaller spaces to make tagging easier and faster
  • Play team versions: last 2–3 fish compete as finalists

Coaching Points

  • Improves agility, sprinting, and reaction speed
  • Encourages awareness of space and quick decision-making
  • Builds group energy and excitement at the start of practice
  • Promotes teamwork and fun for younger players
