Net Approach Scoring
This drill is designed for middle school, high school, and camp-level players to encourage aggressive net play. By modifying the scoring system to reward volleys and smashes with two points instead of one, players are motivated to approach the net and finish points with attacking shots. It adds a strategic layer to regular match play while reinforcing the value of net positioning.
Setup
- Two players (singles format)
- Standard tennis court with balls
- Normal game scoring (love–15–30–40)
Rules & Objectives
- Players begin a game using standard scoring
- Any rally-winning shot hit at the net (volley or smash) counts for two points instead of one
- Example: A volley winner from the deuce side counts as 30–love instead of 15–love
- Continue play with the next point served from the correct side to maintain scoring rotation
- Emphasize that net winners must be clear and decisive to earn two points
Repetition
- Play multiple games with this scoring system
- Add additional strategic bonuses (e.g., lob winners or down-the-line passes can also be worth two points)
- Rotate opponents to give players experience against different playing styles
- Run short timed matches (e.g., first to 10 minutes) to keep intensity high
Coaching Points
- Encourages players to approach the net more often
- Reinforces attacking volleys and overhead smashes
- Builds awareness of court positioning and finishing opportunities
- Adds competitive excitement by rewarding strategic play
