Marker Target & Movement
This beginner-friendly drill introduces players to volley rallies while adding a movement and coordination element. Players practice volleying from the service line with markers set up as targets, then incorporate side shuffles to pick up and reposition balls. The activity reinforces good volley fundamentals—low stance, racquet up, and contact in front—while keeping beginners active and engaged.
Setup
- 4 players (2 per side)
- Place markers (cones or flat discs) at the intersections of the service line and singles sideline (one on each side for each player)
- On one side, place a ball balanced on top of each marker
- Players positioned on the service line, facing each other
Rules & Objectives
- Players begin a cooperative volley rally from the service line, keeping the ball in play as long as possible
- When the rally ends, both players side-shuffle to the marker, pick up the ball, and move it to the opposite cone on their side
- Players return quickly to ready position and restart the rally
- Continue repeating the rally and marker movement sequence
Repetition
- Run timed rounds (e.g., 3–5 minutes) with quick transitions
- Restrict rallies to forehand-only or backhand-only volleys
- Add competition: award points for the longest rally before retrieving balls
- Increase intensity by requiring explosive side-shuffles each time
Coaching Points
- Builds volley fundamentals: racquet up, contact in front, low center of gravity
- Improves footwork and lateral movement
- Develops coordination between rallying and recovery movement
- Keeps beginner players active and engaged in a structured, fun drill
