Long Tennis Rally Drills

Long rally drills are excellent for developing focus, endurance, and rhythm while reinforcing consistent baseline play. Players must maintain controlled shots for an extended sequence before transitioning into a live point, simulating high-pressure “crunch time” situations.

Setup

  • Two players positioned on the baseline
  • Optional: additional players waiting on the sidelines to rotate in

Rules & Objectives

  • Players rally back and forth, aiming for 30–40 consecutive shots
  • After the final rally shot (e.g., the 40th ball), the point immediately becomes live and is played out
  • If a player makes an error before the target number of shots, that player is replaced by the next person in rotation
  • The player who rotates out moves to the net or sideline to help count the rally shots and track consistency
  • Variations:
  • Restrict rallies to crosscourt only before opening up the point
  • Require down-the-line rallies before playing the point
  • Adjust the number of rally shots (e.g., 20 for beginners, 40+ for advanced players)
  • For advanced players, set stricter requirements (e.g., balls must land past the service line)

Repetition

Coaching Points

  • Builds mental toughness by sustaining long rallies under pressure
  • Reinforces shot consistency and depth control
  • Prepares players for competitive points after extended rallies
  • Improves concentration, stamina, and side-to-side movement
