Lob and Smash Practice
This drill develops overhead consistency, footwork, and concentration by combining lob feeding with net-player reactions. Players at the baseline practice hitting controlled lobs while net players focus on proper positioning, timing, and execution of overhead smashes. The addition of tapping the net between repetitions reinforces recovery footwork and builds habits for dynamic movement.
Setup
- 4 players: 2 at the baseline, 2 at the net
- Standard tennis court with balls
- Baseline players feed lobs to the opposite net players
Rules & Objectives
- Baseline players hit controlled lobs that land near the service line
- Net players execute overhead smashes back toward the baseline players
- After each overhead, net players move forward, tap the net with their racquet, and recover back toward the service line
- Continue the sequence for 2–3 minutes, keeping the rally alive
- Switch roles so baseline players practice overheads and net players practice lobs
Repetition
- Increase lob depth to challenge overhead footwork
- Add scoring: award points for every successful overhead returned in play
- Progress to alternating forehand and backhand overheads
- Extend to full point play, where baseline players try to win the rally with lobs and net players win with overheads
Coaching Points
- Improves overhead smash technique and timing
- Reinforces recovery footwork after each shot
- Builds concentration and consistency in live rally conditions
- Helps baseline players develop controlled lob skills
