Inside-Out Crosscourt Challenge
This advanced drill develops stamina, footwork, and precision by requiring players to hit exclusively inside-out forehands during crosscourt rallies. By forcing players to move around their backhand side, the exercise emphasizes explosive footwork, early preparation, and controlled shot-making under pressure. It’s a grinding drill designed to push players physically and mentally, building the endurance and reliability needed at higher competitive levels.
Setup
- Four players positioned on the baseline (two per side)
- Use singles court width plus doubles alley for the crosscourt area
- Basket of balls for underhand feeds to start points
Rules & Objectives
- Player 1 underhand-feeds crosscourt to Player 3 to start the rally
- From that point, the ball is live, and the two players rally crosscourt
- Condition: all shots must be inside-out forehands (players run around their backhand side)
- No drop shots or volleys are allowed initially; focus is on inside-out groundstrokes
- After each point, rotate players so the next pair competes
- Play to 7 points; winners face each other, and losers play off separately
- Switch drill to the opposite side of the court so players practice from both wings
Repetition
- Run multiple sets to 7, with players rotating partners frequently
- Add restrictions, such as requiring deeper targets or higher net clearance
- Allow drop shots and volleys in later rounds for variety
- Extend play to baseline games or tiebreak-style scoring for intensity
Coaching Points
- Reinforces inside-out forehand technique under game conditions
- Improves explosive footwork by forcing players to cover more court
- Builds consistency and endurance through repetitive, high-demand rallies
- Prepares players for the tactical use of the inside-out forehand in matches
