High and Low Forehand Volley Drill
This drill trains players to handle both high and low forehand volleys with proper control and placement. By alternating feeds, the net player learns to adjust footwork and racket angle while keeping a firm wrist and making contact out in front. The drill reinforces the idea of blocking and guiding volleys rather than swinging, helping players build touch and consistency near the net.
Setup
- One player at the baseline with a basket of balls
- One player positioned inside the service box, close to the net
- Two cones/targets placed: one in the service box (for high volleys), one deep near the baseline (for low volleys)
Rules & Objectives
- Baseline player feeds alternating high and low forehand balls
- Net player volleys high feeds into the short service-box target area
- Net player volleys low feeds deep toward the baseline target
- Continue until two cones are knocked over or 5 minutes have passed
- Switch roles and repeat
Repetition
- Start with only forehand feeds for consistency
- Progress to alternating forehand and backhand feeds
- Add movement: net player begins at the service line, split steps, then moves forward to volley each sequence before recovering back to the service line
Coaching Points
- Improves control on both high and low volleys
- Reinforces correct technique: firm wrist, no swing, contact in front
- Develops touch on short volleys and depth on low volleys
- Builds quick recovery habits with split-step movement
