Hand-Eye Coordination Drill

This simple drill helps young children develop hand-eye coordination, reaction speed, and focus—all essential foundations for learning tennis. It’s designed for players as young as four or five who are just starting out. The activity is fun, engaging, and can be done without rackets, making it an excellent introduction to the sport. Kids also learn to stay balanced in a ready position while tracking a moving ball.

Setup

  • Two players
  • One tennis ball
  • Open space on the court or in a safe play area
  • The catcher stands in ready position facing forward, with their partner standing directly behind them holding the ball

Rules & Objectives

  • The player in the back gently tosses the ball over their partner’s head
  • The front player allows the ball to bounce once
  • From the ready position (knees bent, leaning slightly forward, light on their toes), the front player moves forward to catch the ball with one hand
  • The catcher tosses the ball back to their partner behind them
  • Repeat the sequence three times, then switch roles

Repetition

  • Alternate catching with the left and right hands to build coordination on both sides
  • Add a variation where the thrower must call the catcher’s name before tossing
  • For more challenge, remove the bounce so the catcher tries to grab the ball before it hits the ground

Coaching Points

  • Builds quick reactions and footworkEncourages correct ready position
  • Improves balance and focus for young players
