Half-Court Net Duel

This drill sharpens volley technique, reflexes, and aggression at the net by creating fast-paced exchanges in a half-court setting. Players start just behind the service line, with one feeding the ball and immediately rushing the net, while the opponent responds with volleys. The game encourages forward movement, net dominance, and quick reactions while allowing variations with or without lobs.

Setup

  • 2 players
  • Start just behind the service line on one half of the court (include doubles alleys)
  • Tennis balls and racquets

Rules & Objectives

  • The red player feeds the ball to the black player across the net
  • Immediately after feeding, the red player rushes forward to the net
  • The black player volleys the feed back into play, and the point is live
  • Players continue rallying in one half of the court only, including doubles alleys
  • Lobs are optional:First 5 minutes: volleys only, no lobs
  • Later: allow lobs for more realistic point play

Repetition

  • Begin with cooperative rallies for 5 minutes to establish rhythm
  • Progress to competitive point play with scoring (e.g., best of 3 or best of 5 mini-matches)
  • Add restrictions, such as forehand-only or backhand-only volleys
  • Rotate feeders so both players practice rushing forward

Coaching Points

  • Improves volley control, reflexes, and decision-making
  • Reinforces aggressive forward movement at the net
  • Trains recovery when handling lobs
  • Builds confidence in dominating half-court exchanges
