Four-Shot Second Serve & Return Sequence
This drill reinforces the importance of quality second serves and structured point play by focusing on a four-shot sequence: serve, return, server’s reply, and returner’s reply. It emphasizes accuracy, consistency, and tactical awareness while giving both players the chance to practice under controlled conditions. Variations add challenge and realism, making this a flexible drill for intermediate and advanced players.
Setup
- Two players: one server (red) and one returner (black)
- Standard singles court
- Basket of balls for consistent serving
- Play starts from the deuce side, then switch to the ad side
Rules & Objectives
- Server delivers a second serve into the service box
- Returner hits the return back into play
- Server replies with a groundstroke (third shot)
- Returner hits one more shot (fourth shot)
- After the fourth shot, the rally ends, and both players reset
- Repeat this sequence for 10 serves on the deuce side, then switch to the ad side for 10 more
Repetition
- Server aims for specific target zones (wide, body, T)
- Variation 1: Server must serve and volley, finishing the point at the net
- Variation 2: Returner must approach after the return, forcing the server to defend
- Track serve percentage and return consistency to add competitive pressure
- Play multiple sets of 20 serves (10 per side) for high repetition
Coaching Points
- Builds reliable second serves under pressure
- Trains returners to neutralize and redirect serves effectively
- Reinforces structured point patterns beyond the serve and return
- Develops tactical awareness with optional serve-and-volley or return-and-approach variations
- Improves stamina, footwork, and consistency for both players
