Four-Ball Feeding Sequence

This beginner-friendly drill introduces players to rally patterns, approach shots, and volleys in a structured sequence. By combining groundstrokes with transition shots, players develop consistency, footwork, and awareness of court positioning. The four-ball sequence can be easily repeated or expanded, making it suitable for players of all levels.

Setup

  • Player positioned at baseline, ready to begin
  • Coach/feeder on the opposite side with a basket of balls
  • Full singles court available

Rules & Objectives

  • Ball 1 – Coach feeds deep; player hits an approach shot down the line
  • Ball 2 – Player moves forward and hits a volley down the line
  • Ball 3 – After recovering back to center, player hits another approach shot down the line
  • Ball 4 – Player finishes the sequence with a volley out of the air
  • Repeat the sequence for each player in rotation

Repetition

  • Standard: 4-ball sequence per player
  • Progression: increase to 8-ball or 12-ball sequences
  • Variation: mix patterns (e.g., crosscourt approach + volley crosscourt)
  • Add competition: score points for hitting designated targets (cones or zones)

  • Builds shot sequencing awareness (approach + volley)
  • Reinforces court positioning and recovery between strokes
  • Trains consistency and accuracy in transition play
  • Develops confidence at the net for beginners
