Four-Ball Feeding Drill

This drill is designed for one-on-one coaching sessions to improve rhythm, stroke consistency, and transition play. The coach hand-feeds four consecutive balls, alternating between deep baseline shots and approach shots. Repeating the sequence builds stamina, accuracy, and confidence in both forehand and backhand strokes.

Setup

  • Coach stands at the T-line with a basket of balls
  • Student starts at the baseline

Rules & Objectives

  • Ball 1: Coach feeds a deep ball. Player hits a groundstroke down the line
  • Ball 2: Player moves forward. Coach feeds a shorter ball. Player hits an approach shot down the line
  • Ball 3: Player recovers to the opposite side (forehand or backhand). Coach feeds a deep ball. Player hits down the line
  • Ball 4: Coach feeds another shorter ball. Player hits a second approach shot down the line, ideally on the rise
  • Player returns to baseline position
  • Repeat the sequence for multiple rounds
  • Variations
  • Crosscourt version: Alternate between down-the-line and crosscourt feeds to add variety
  • Add a volley after the final approach shot for net play practice

Coaching Points
