Forehand & Backhand Focus

This warm-up drill is designed to prepare players for match play by isolating specific strokes while maintaining rally consistency. Players work in pairs and focus only on forehands or backhands, helping reinforce technique and confidence in a controlled setting. By starting in the mini-court and progressing to full-court rallies or point play, the drill provides flexibility for all levels. It’s also a simple way to build rhythm, timing, and consistency before moving into more advanced practice.

Setup

  • Players split into pairs, one pair on each side of the court
  • Player 1 and Player 2 rally together; Player 3 and Player 4 rally together
  • Each pair uses half of the court (down-the-line to start)
  • Tennis balls and rackets

Rules & Objectives

  • Assign one player in each pair to hit only forehands, and the other to hit only backhands
  • Begin rallying in the mini-court (short court)
  • After 2–3 minutes, switch roles so the other player practices the opposite stroke
  • Continue rallying, focusing on controlled groundstrokes (no volleys at first)
  • Optionally, extend the drill crosscourt or move back to the baseline for full rallies

Repetition

  • Repeat several rounds, rotating partners if needed
  • Add competitiveness by playing mini-games to 7 points
  • Start points with underhand feeds and allow winners from each pair to face off
  • Progress from mini-tennis to baseline rallies as players warm up

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces consistency in forehands and backhands
  • Builds rhythm, timing, and early confidence
  • Encourages shot repetition under light pressure
  • Provides an adaptable warm-up from mini-tennis to full point play
