Forehand–Backhand Alternation Drill
This drill develops forehand and backhand fundamentals while reinforcing forward momentum and recovery habits. Players hit alternating feeds from the coach, focusing on balance, footwork, and clean contact. By combining stroke execution with a quick run to the net post after each shot, players also build conditioning and rhythm.
Setup
- Players line up behind the baseline
- The coach stands at the T-line on the same side of the net with a basket of balls
- Optional: Place an agility ladder near the baseline or doubles alley for added footwork work
Rules & Objectives
- The first player steps forward as the coach hand-feeds a ball toward the service line
- The player moves in and hits either a forehand or backhand, depending on the feed
- After the shot, the player continues forward, runs to the net post, taps it, and circles back to rejoin the line
- The next player immediately steps in as the coach alternates the feed to the opposite side
- Continue alternating forehands and backhands for all players
Repetition
- Run the drill until each player completes several forehand and backhand repetitions
- Vary feeds by changing speed, height, or placement
- Increase pace by reducing time between feeds
- Add a footwork ladder before players strike the ball for extra coordination training
Coaching Points
- Reinforces proper ready position and forward momentum into each shot
- Improves reaction to varied feeds
- Builds endurance and quick recovery habits
- Strengthens both forehand and backhand mechanics
