Footwork and Coordination Game
This fun coordination drill helps kids improve balance, footwork, and reaction time while also introducing competitive elements in a playful way. Starting with simple kicking movements, children learn to move laterally, control their body, and anticipate the ball’s path. As the drill progresses, rackets can be added to transition from basic coordination to tennis-specific skills.
Setup
- Two markers or cones placed a few feet apart (goal area)
- One player stands on the line between the markers (the “goalie”)
- The partner stands opposite, several feet away, with a ball
- Tennis balls or soft balls (to start)
Rules & Objectives
- The outside player kicks the ball toward the goalie’s marker area
- The goalie shuffles side to side, staying on the line, and must stop the ball with their feet
- Once controlled, the goalie kicks the ball back to their partner
- After several turns, switch roles so both players practice defending and kicking
Repetition
- Start cooperatively: both players aim to keep the ball moving accurately
- Make it competitive: the outside player tries to get the ball past the goalie between the cones
- Add rackets: players roll the ball with their rackets instead of kicking
- Progress to trying to get the ball past the goalie using racket control
- Rotate positions so every child plays both attacker and goalie roles
Coaching Points
- Improves lateral footwork and agility
- Develops reaction speed and coordination
- Introduces defensive positioning in a playful way
- Provides a natural transition from body control to racket control
