Foam Ball Chase Game
This playful drill combines basic stroke practice with an exciting chase game, keeping young players motivated and engaged. Kids practice hitting consistent shots over the net, then add an element of fun by running around the court while the coach tries to tag them with a foam ball. The drill helps beginners build consistency, focus, and movement skills while enjoying a lighthearted competition.
Setup
- Group of players (lined up side by side on the baseline or service line)
- Coach with a basket of balls and one foam ball
- Full tennis court available
Rules & Objectives
- Players line up on the baseline, side by side
- The coach feeds one ball at a time to each player in sequence
- Players try to hit the ball over the net, earning a point only if it lands in play
- When the group successfully makes 10 shots in a row (or another set goal), all players must run around the outside of the court
- While they run, the coach tries to tag them by tossing or lightly hitting a foam ball at them
- Once players return to their positions, the drill continues with new stroke requirements (e.g., forehands only, backhands only)
Repetition
- Start with a goal of 10 consecutive shots, then increase the rally count as players improve
- Vary the strokes required (forehand, backhand, or alternating)
- Move players up to the service line to practice shorter exchanges before returning to baseline
- Track how many times each player gets tagged with the foam ball for a fun, light competition
Coaching Points
- Reinforces consistency in hitting over the net
- Improves reaction time and footwork while running
- Encourages teamwork as players work toward rally goals together
- Keeps kids engaged with a playful, game-like format
