First-Strike Serve & Winner Challenge

This drill focuses on developing the first serve as a weapon by rewarding players only when they win points directly or immediately off the serve. It builds accuracy, power, and tactical variation while reinforcing the mindset of using the first serve to create pressure and seize control of the point. The timed format keeps intensity high, making it ideal for competitive training.

Setup

  • Two players (server and returner)
  • Standard singles court
  • Basket of balls for serving
  • Timer set for 8–10 minutes, split into two 4–5 minute segments

Rules & Objectives

  • Red player begins as the server, hitting only first serves from the deuce side
  • Server scores a point only if:The serve is an ace
  • The serve produces a service winner (return error)
  • The serve forces a short return that the server immediately puts away
  • The serve-and-volley attempt results in a winner
  • Server continues serving only from the deuce side until they score, then switches to the ad side
  • Play continues for 4–5 minutes, keeping track of the server’s points
  • After time is up, switch roles: the returner becomes the server for the next 4–5 minutes

Repetition

  • Alternate between deuce and ad sides after each scoring strike
  • Add variations in serve type: flat, slice, and kick serves
  • Require servers to hit specific targets (wide, body, T) for advanced training
  • Track number of first-strike points over multiple rounds to measure improvement

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces aggressive mindset with the serve as a weapon
  • Builds accuracy and placement under pressure
  • Improves tactical serve variation to prevent predictability
  • Trains players to capitalize immediately on weak returns
