Figure Eight Movement

This figure-eight style drill is designed for junior players to build early habits of proper footwork, preparation, and timing. Each player works on hitting consecutive shots while moving around a marker, reinforcing body rotation and clean contact in front of the body. The drill emphasizes early racket preparation and striking the ball at the peak of the bounce. It’s a foundational exercise that helps young athletes develop consistency and movement patterns essential for long-term growth in tennis.

Setup

  • Place a marker (cone or target) near the baseline on each side of the court
  • Players line up in sequence behind the baseline
  • Coach/feeder with basket of balls positioned across the net

Rules & Objectives

  • Player 1 moves behind the marker and hits a forehand down the line
  • They retreat behind the baseline, loop around the marker again, and prepare for a second fed ball
  • Player 1 hits the second shot down the line, then returns to the line
  • Player 2 steps in and repeats the same sequence: two shots, circling behind the marker each time
  • Continue rotation until all players have taken turns
  • Switch sides to practice both forehand and backhand patterns
  • Optionally, vary targets (down the line or crosscourt) based on focus

Repetition

  • Each player completes multiple rounds of two shots per turn
  • Increase intensity by feeding faster or deeper balls
  • Add crosscourt variations after players master down-the-line execution
  • Challenge players to maintain rally consistency while moving around the marker

Coaching Points

  • Builds strong footwork and court movement
  • Reinforces early racket preparation and torso rotation
  • Trains players to make contact in front of the body at the peak of the bounce
  • Helps juniors form early habits of balance, timing, and shot discipline
