Defense-to-Attack Transition Drill
This drill trains players to transition from defensive positions into aggressive, attacking play. By starting with deep defensive feeds and gradually moving forward, players learn how to adjust their shot selection, timing, and positioning. The sequence builds confidence in using defensive shots to stay in the rally, then converting opportunities into strong approach shots and finishing at the net. It emphasizes footwork, early preparation, and aggressive intent.
Setup
- One player begins at the baseline
- Coach stands ready to feed four consecutive balls
- Drill can be run from either forehand or backhand side
Rules & Objectives
- First feed: Deep, high ball to the baseline → player responds with a defensive shot
- Second feed: Another deep feed, slightly less challenging → player maintains control with a neutral shot
- Third feed: Shorter ball into the service box → player steps in and hits an aggressive approach shot, preferably down the line
- Fourth feed: Player moves forward to finish with a strong volley placed deep past the service line
- Repeat sequence from the opposite side of the court
Repetition
- Alternate starting from forehand and backhand sides
- Vary feed depth and spin to simulate different rally conditions
- Add competitive scoring by awarding points for successful attacking sequences completed without errors
