Deep vs. Short Recognition Drill
This drill teaches players to recognize shot depth and react appropriately. By calling out “deep” or “short” before making contact, players improve anticipation and court awareness. The cooperative rally format helps beginners and intermediates develop decision-making skills without the pressure of point play.
Setup
- Two players rally cooperatively from the baseline
- Define zones:
- Deep shot = lands beyond the service line
- Short shot = lands inside the service box
Rules & Objectives
- Players rally back and forth, aiming for consistency
- Before hitting each ball, the player must audibly call “deep” if the ball lands past the service line or “short” if it lands inside the service box
- The call must be made before contact, not after
- Continue the rally cooperatively with both players maintaining clear calls
Repetition
- Run the drill for several minutes at a time
- Rotate partners to create different rally experiences
- Increase difficulty by adding movement, such as stepping in on short balls or recovering deeper on long balls
Coaching Points
