Crosscourt & Down-the-Line Sequences

This drill builds precision, quick reactions, and finishing ability on volleys. Players practice hitting both down-the-line and crosscourt volleys while incorporating putaway poaches. The structured sequence ensures players learn to control placement while moving efficiently, and the optional baseline variation adds a conditioning and transition element.

Setup

  • 1 coach/feeder at the T-line
  • 2 single-file lines of players at the service line (one on each side)
  • Standard court and balls

Rules & Objectives

  • The coach feeds two balls to each player in sequence
  • Ball 1: Player hits a controlled volley (forehand or backhand) either down the line or crosscourt
  • Ball 2: Player executes a poach-style volley that must be hit crosscourt as a putaway shot
  • After completing the two volleys, the player side-shuffles and returns to the end of their line
  • Alternate between the two service-line lines so players rotate quickly
  • Continue until all players have cycled through multiple repetitions

Repetition

  • Require alternating sides (one round forehand-first, the next backhand-first)
  • For consistency, make Ball 1 always down-the-line, Ball 2 always crosscourt
  • Competitive version: award points for successful targets or putaway winners
  • Baseline variation:Two players start at the baseline
  • Both move out wide to hit a groundstroke (crosscourt or down-the-line)
  • After hitting, they cross paths through the middle and return to the end of the opposite line
  • The next two players repeat the sequence

Coaching Points

  • Improves volley control, accuracy, and finishing power
  • Builds awareness of court positioning (when to go down the line vs crosscourt)
  • Trains quick footwork and recovery after volleys
  • Adds variety by integrating both net and baseline transition work
