Court Line Reaction Game

This energetic drill helps beginners learn the names and locations of court lines while improving speed, agility, and reaction time. By responding quickly to the coach’s calls, players develop court awareness and movement fundamentals. Adding variations keeps the activity fun, challenging, and adaptable for all ages.

Setup

  • Players start near the net on one side of the court
  • Coach positioned to call out commands
  • Optional: rackets and balls for advanced variations

Rules & Objectives

  • Coach begins by reviewing the names of the court lines (service line, baseline, doubles sideline, etc.)
  • Players line up at the net
  • Coach calls out a line, and all players sprint to that line as quickly as possible
  • Players return to the net after each call, ready for the next command

Repetition

  • Add movement variations: side shuffles, high knees, butt kicks, skipping, or arms stretched out
  • Require players to stay in athletic stance (knees bent, low center of gravity)
  • Have players hold rackets while moving to simulate tennis positioning
  • Advanced variation: players balance a ball on their racket while moving to the called line
  • Play for several minutes as a warm-up, mixing commands rapidly to test reaction time

Coaching Points

  • Improves court awareness and line recognition

  • Reinforces tennis-ready movement and balance
