Competitive Volley Exchange Drill
This drill develops control, quick reactions, and confidence at the net by focusing on volley exchanges. Instead of relying on forceful punches, players learn to volley with feel, proper positioning, and footwork. By rotating players between the baseline and service line, everyone gains experience both attacking at the net and transitioning forward.
Setup
- Two players positioned on one service line
- Two players positioned on the opposite service line
- Two players waiting on each baseline (to rotate in)
- Balls for feeding (coach or player)
Rules & Objectives
- A player or coach feeds an underarm ball into play (no lobs allowed)
- The two pairs at the service line play out a competitive volley rally
- After each point, the baseline players switch with the service-line players
- Optional: coach may feed the first ball instead of a player to ensure consistency
Repetition
- Continue rallying and rotating for 5 minutes before switching sides
- Increase intensity by requiring players to hit only cross-court or only down-the-line volleys
- Add scoring (e.g., first to 7 points) to build competitiveness
Coaching Points
- Improves volley technique (firm wrist, hitting in front, soft hands)
- Enhances reflexes and quick decision-making at the net
- Reinforces movement forward from the baseline
- Builds teamwork and pressure-handling in competitive scenarios
