Clean Up Your Yard

This fun and active game is designed to introduce kids to the serving motion and basic rallying concepts in a playful way. By throwing or hitting balls over the net, children practice coordination, timing, and movement while staying engaged in a team competition. It’s safe, adaptable, and works well in group settings, making it an ideal starter activity for kids’ tennis classes.

Setup

  • Divide the group into two teams, one on each side of the net
  • Place an equal number of low-pressure or foam balls on each side of the court
  • Players line up behind or near the service line
  • Use only low-pressure or foam balls (not regular balls) for safety

Rules & Objectives

  • On the coach’s signal, players run to collect balls from their side
  • Each player must throw the ball overhand over the net (to mimic the serve motion) or, for beginners, underhand
  • Variation: players scoop balls with their rackets and hit them over the net, staying behind the service line
  • Play for 2–3 minutes
  • At the end of the round, the team with the fewest balls left on their side wins
  • Reset with an equal number of balls on each side and repeat

Repetition

  • Start with underhand throws, then progress to overhand throws for serve development
  • Introduce racket scoops for older kids or more advanced groups
  • Add movement rules (e.g., players must run to the backcourt before throwing)
  • Play multiple rounds to keep energy and engagement high

Coaching Points

  • Introduces the basic serve motion in a fun, safe way
  • Improves hand-eye coordination and ball tracking
  • Builds teamwork, agility, and constant movement
  • Keeps kids engaged with a competitive, playful environment
  • Suitable for large groups in camps, classes, or beginner clinics
