Champs and Chumps Drill

This drill develops singles tactics in a fast-paced and competitive format. Players rotate between two sides of the court—one designated as the “Champion” side and the other as the “Chump” side. Each rally determines which side a player remains on, creating constant movement, pressure, and excitement for large groups.

Setup

  • Minimum of 6 players
  • Players line up behind the baseline on both sides of the court
  • One side is the Champion side, the other is the Chump side
  • Play takes place on a singles court

Rules & Objectives

  • The first player from each line steps in to play a point
  • The point begins with a drop-hit (or serve, as a variation) from the Champion side
  • Players rally the point to completion under standard singles rules
  • The winner goes to the end of the Champion line; the loser goes to the end of the Chump line
  • The next two players immediately step in and repeat the process
  • Play continues with rapid rotations, ensuring all players get frequent turns

Repetition

  • Run the drill for a set time (e.g., 10 minutes)
  • Vary the feed: use drop-hits, underhand feeds, or serves to start points
  • Adjust intensity by requiring players to start with crosscourt or down-the-line shots

Coaching Points

  • Builds tactical awareness in singles play
  • Encourages competitive energy in a group setting
  • Provides high repetition of point play without long waits
  • Keeps practice fun and engaging for adult players
